An Echo For Exile (2023), the third film in the Echoes series, fleshes out the backstory of Jamila’s dad, the South African jazz musician Russell Herman. Combining interviews, personal ephemera and recorded archives – created during a research trip to Cape Town in December 2022 – the work traces the history of the jazz fusion movement against the backdrop of apartheid. Central is a consideration of how music acted as a method of resistance against the oppressive regime; following the journeys of the exile communities that ended up in London, Stockholm, and New York, including Russell.
